Well first off, welcome to my new blog. Well it’s actually the same blog, what I should say actually is that I’ve moved! I’m now being hosted by (mt) media temple, and I’ve got this fancy new url, and my fancy new website up and running. Now the time has come for me to really turn my attention to Wordpress. I’ve been dabbling a little here and there for a while now, but now I’m diving into the deep end and am working on some themes, including one for this blog here. My other themes that I’m working on I plan on throwing up on ThemeForest…you know, I talked about some of this stuff already didn’t I? Ok, enough of that.
So I was checking the blogs that I follow as I do every day, and there was a great post today by Chris Coyier over at CSS-Tricks. He talks about something that is just oh so very true, and actually quite frustrating.
Most of us maintain several different websites for several different clients. To the client, their website is their whole world, so it makes perfect sense to them when they shoot you an email asking you to change a date quick. But when we open that email, we get the uhmmmmmmm….what feeling.
I feel your pain my friend. Right now I only maintain one website, kenlongassoc.com, but because it’s a special events company, and there are so many events online at any one time, I often have the same problem. Sometimes there are instances where the same bit of information is in multiple places on an event page, but only one of those instances has the error in it, so I’ll have to spend my time hunting down the problem, when just a little explanation would have saved me the time and trouble. Quoting Chris again…
I would much prefer being treated like a six year old. Not being talked down to, just being VERY VERY clear about what is needed:
- What page needs changing (URL link!)
- Does it appear in multiple places?
- What does is say now?
- What should it say?
- When does it need to be done?
These are great points, and I believe all clients should follow them. It will save time, and allow any changes to be made that much more quickly and easily.
